Where to start reading comics: Appendix one Intro Books

Appendix one: intro books

The idea behind each of these volumes is that you can start with just this volumne and get a full, complete, enjyoable story. They are jumping on points and at the same time are great sign posts for how to expand outward towards other books.

For Batman I recomend two books. Firstly Batman:Year One by Frank Miller. This is the inspiration for Batman Begins and is a great read. The other book is out of continuity but stands on it's own and is a good read. Brian Azzerlo's Joker. Joker is the spiritual sequel to The Dark Knight.

For Green Lantern there are two books, one after another that are worth a read. Firstly is Green Lantern: Secret Origin.

Brubaker's Captain America. This begins with Man out of Time(or Winter Solider in some printings). The easiest way to tell the difference is to look for the collection written by Ed Brubaker and drawn by Steve Epting starting with issue one and starting in 2004.

Daredevil by Brian Michael Bendis. This is easily available with Daredevil by Brian Bendis Ultimate collection book 1.

Fractions Ironman. Written by Matt Fraction the first story arc, Five Nightmares is a good read. As is the rest of the run. Avaiable individually as Five Nightmares or a large portion of his run as The Invincible Iron Man hardcover Vol. 1.

JMS's Thor. Thor by J. Michael Stryzynski. Available as individual volumes or in a single omnibus.

Ultimate Spider-Man volumne One. Written by Brian Bendis drawn by Mark Bagley.

Ultimates. Written by Mark Millar, Drawn by Bryan Hitch. This is the closest comic book adaptation to the Avengers that will be in theaters.

X-factor vol 1. A great off the beaten path detective book featuring Mutants and the phenomenal writing of Peter (Allen) David.

Astonishing X-men written by Joss Whedon.

Green Arrow by Kevin Smith
